About Grace & Footnotes

Faith worth thinking about.
Grace worth sharing.

I’m Stephen Sawyer. This is my personal website about Christian faith, honest questions, and following Jesus in ordinary life.

Where I stand

I grew up Baptist, the son of a Baptist pastor. My theology is Reformed and Baptist. Scripture is my final authority, salvation is by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, and the good news of Jesus Christ is the center of everything I believe.

I have learned a great deal from teachers such as Gavin Ortlund and Wes Huff. I want these pages to combine clear convictions, careful attention to church history and the Bible’s reliability, and charity toward Christians who disagree.

I am glad to call everyone who trusts Christ a brother or sister, whatever their church. Our shared faith in him runs deeper than our differences, and those differences deserve an honest, loving hearing. Above all, I want to lead with love and point to Jesus.

I write as a lay Christian. These pages express my own views and do not speak for a church, denomination, or ministry.

Why this site exists

Christianity makes claims worth examining: that God has spoken, that Jesus died for sinners and rose again, and that his grace changes lives. This site makes room to explore those claims and what they mean for the way we live.

You are welcome whether you believe, doubt, or are still finding the words for your questions. Read at your own pace, follow the sources, and join the conversation.

I research and draft my essays with AI assistance and review each one before publication.

The heart of what I believe

Statement of faith

I believe in one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Creator of all things. Every person bears his image and deserves dignity and love.

I believe the Bible is God’s inspired and trustworthy Word, true in all it affirms and the final authority for Christian faith and life. I gladly confess the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds as faithful summaries of its teaching.

I believe we have all sinned and cannot save ourselves. Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human, born of a virgin. He lived without sin, died in our place for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, and reigns as Lord.

I believe salvation is the work of God’s sovereign grace from beginning to end. The Father chose a people in Christ, the Son laid down his life for them, and the Holy Spirit gives new life and draws them to faith. Everyone who comes to Christ will be received.

I believe we are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, for his sake and not for our works. The Holy Spirit makes believers holy and produces repentance, love, and good works, and God keeps his people to the end.

I believe the church is all who belong to Christ in every age and place, gathered in local congregations to worship, hear his Word, and love one another and their neighbors. Christ gave his church baptism, the immersion of those who profess faith in him, and the Lord’s Supper, where believers remember his death and are nourished by him through faith.

I believe Jesus will return to judge the world in righteousness and make all things new. My hope is in the resurrection and eternal life with him.

A brief summary of my Christian faith, with room for fuller discussion in the writing.

Grace, and the footnotes

Grace is the undeserved kindness of God, given to us in Jesus Christ. A footnote lets a reader check a claim and keep exploring. The name brings together the hope behind these pages and the care their arguments should receive.

Scripture and sources

I read Scripture with attention to its context and the whole biblical story. The historic Christian creeds, church history, and thoughtful scholarship help us examine our understanding; all teaching remains answerable to Scripture.

Bible quotations use the English Standard Version (ESV). Quotations, summaries, and interpretations should be clearly distinguished, with sources you can examine for yourself.
